How to Get ChatGPT to Recommend Your Local Business
Ask ChatGPT for a roofer, a dentist or a web designer near Red Bank and it will name a few businesses. Most owners have no idea why they made that list, or why they didn't.

The short answer
AI assistants recommend local businesses they can confirm from several sources at once: a complete Google Business Profile, the same name, address and phone across directories, reviews that describe the actual work, and a website with clear service and town pages. There is no slot to buy. You earn the mention by being easy to verify.
Where the AI gets its answer
When someone asks ChatGPT or Gemini for a local recommendation, the assistant usually runs a web search in the background and summarizes what it finds. Google’s AI answers lean on the same Business Profile data that feeds the map pack. So the real question isn’t how to rank in ChatGPT. It’s what the open web says about your business, and whether it all agrees.
That’s good news. Nearly everything on this list also helps your map pack and organic rankings. None of it is a trick.
1. Make your Google Business Profile the source of truth
Primary category, services, service areas, hours, photos and a description that says plainly what you do and where. If the profile says contractor and the website says kitchen remodeling, the assistant has to guess. Don’t make it guess. We cover the settings that matter most in why your business isn’t in the map pack.
2. Put the same facts everywhere
Name, address and phone should match across your website, Google, Bing, Apple Maps, Yelp, the BBB, your chamber and any industry directories. Assistants cross-check sources. Three versions of your suite number look like three different businesses.
3. Get reviews that describe the work
A page of “Great service!” tells an AI very little. A review that says “replaced our AC in Middletown the same week” tells it what you do, where you do it and how fast. Ask happy customers to mention the job and the town. Never script them and never buy them.
4. Give it a website it can read
One page per service, one page per town you actually serve, and a short, plain answer near the top of each. Real text, not words baked into images. Your address and phone in the footer. It’s the same groundwork behind our SEO services.
Then check that your site isn’t turning these tools away. Some security settings, firewalls and plugins block AI crawlers, and owners rarely know it happened.
5. Get mentioned by someone other than you
Local news, a chamber member spotlight, a sponsor listing for a youth sports team, a supplier’s dealer locator, a genuine best-of roundup. Assistants trust a business more when other sites describe it the same way it describes itself.
What not to bother with
Pages stuffed with “best in New Jersey” claims. Listicles you wrote that rank yourself first. Anyone promising a guaranteed spot in ChatGPT. And don’t expect a clean line in your analytics. AI referrals are still a small slice of traffic, and plenty of them show up as a direct visit or a phone call.
The Monmouth County version
For a business in Red Bank, Freehold or Asbury Park, most of this is an afternoon of work: fix the profile, clean up the handful of directory listings that are wrong, and make sure you have a real page for each town you serve. We do it in person for local clients from our Red Bank office and over video for everyone else.

Follow-up questions
No one can sell you a place in the answer itself. The businesses an assistant names come from what it finds and can confirm on the web, which is why the work looks a lot like local SEO.
It depends on the assistant and how often it rechecks its sources. Profile and directory fixes can be picked up within weeks. Reviews and outside mentions build over months.
No. It is mostly the same work. The business that is strong in the map pack and the organic results is usually the one AI answers pick up too.
Let’s build something.
